Insights to help you keep track of your spending

Your insights

Insights in your first direct App is home to some useful money management tools. It can help you keep track of your money by giving you a better understanding of where it goes each month - how much you're spending, on what, and who with.

Go to 'Insights' to see all your spending insights

Select 'Insights' to get started and view your spending by general category or merchant. (On an iPhone, Insights is on the tab bar. On an Android phone, it's in the menu.

To see personal insights, make sure your Insights Preference is turned on.

  1. Go to the menu. This is represented by three horizontal lines. On iPhone it's in the bottom right and on Android it's in the top left of the screen.
  2. Select 'Insights Preference' and go to ‘Allow insights’.
  3. Switch on spending insights.

Spending by category or merchant

We tell you about your spending and automatically categorise it - for example, groceries, bills, transport. You can change the category of a transaction if you'd like to.

Our spending feature bundles your transactions by category and by merchant. This gives you a better understanding of your spending habits.

Group your transactions using your own labels

You can also group your transactions by adding ‘tags’ - for example, wedding, car, London trip - to any posted transaction in your 1st Account(s).

By adding those tags to other transactions you can see all the transactions for each tag grouped together in 'Insights'.

In Insights you’ll be able to see:

  • how many tags you've set up
  • how many transactions in each tag
  • the total amount of transactions for that tag

Select any tag to see a breakdown of transactions for each month.

How to create your own tags

  1. Log in to your App as normal.
  2. Go to your 1st Account and select the transaction you want to tag. (It must have debited from or credited to your account and not be pending).
  3. More details about the transaction will show. Select the 'Tags' option and follow the on-screen instructions.

If there's no ‘Tags’ option in the transaction details view, you need to opt in to spending insights. To do this:

  1. Go to the menu. This is represented by three horizontal lines. On iPhone it's in the bottom right and on Android it's in the top left of the screen.
  2. Select 'Insights preference' and go to ‘Allow insights’.
  3. Switch on spending insights for the 1st Accounts that you want insights for.
