How do I send money between first direct accounts?
In Online Banking or the App you can click on the account you wish to move the money from then select ‘Move Money’ from the options that appear below and then ‘Existing Payee and my accounts’ for an internal transfer to one of your own accounts or someone you have paid before.
To pay another person who banks with first direct who you have never paid before you would choose the account you wish to send from then select ‘Move Money' from the options that appear and then select ‘New person or small business' to enter all the details required. You will need the person’s name, sort code, account number, reference and payment amount. As this is the first time you are setting up this payment you will need a transaction security code generated by your secure key or digital secure key.

How do I send money to a different bank account?
Setting up a one-off and ad-hoc payments is quick and easy. You can do it in minutes through Online Banking or through our App by selecting ‘Move Money’, then choosing the account you want to send money from followed by ‘New person or small business’.
Then you will need to provide the following details:
- destination sort code (6 digits)
- destination account number (usually 8 digits)
- destination account name
- payment reference
- payment amount
- a transaction security code generated by your Secure Key or Digital Secure Key (If you have our App set up as your Digital Secure Key then you can also use that to pay new and existing beneficiaries).
All payments are subject to internal checks but if you’re unsure whether a payment has arrived with the person/company or not, we would advise them to check with their bank (only after 2 hours of the payment being sent). As soon as the payment goes out of your account it will show up on your statement.

What is Confirmation of Payee?
'Confirmation of Payee' helps protect our customers from 'authorised push payment scams'. This is where people are tricked into sending money to fraudsters pretending to be someone they're not. As well as protecting you from some types of fraud, it also confirms if you’re sending money to a valid account.
When setting up a new payee or new standing orders, or amending an existing payment you’ll see one of the following messages:
Details matched: The name of the account holder, account type and number, as well as any relevant reference you’ve entered, match those held at the payee’s bankClose match: The name you’ve entered closely matches the details held at the payee’s bank.
We’ll show you the actual account name if this closely matches, to help you decide whether or not to send the money or edit the details and try again.
Not matched: The name, account type, account number or relevant reference doesn’t match the details on the account.
If the details you enter don’t match, try going back to the person or organisation you're trying to pay to confirm their info. Double check their details before sending any money, as you may not get it back if you send payment to the wrong payee.
The best way to contact them is on the phone, rather than replying to an email. Fraudsters sometimes set up email addresses of the person or small business you’re trying to pay. Use a telephone number from a trusted source or, an official website (if paying a business).
