Bank holiday for the Queen's funeral

Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we will continue to support you. We've answered some common questions below.

Will first direct be closed on the day of the funeral?

The King has declared the day of The Queen’s funeral, Monday 19 September 2022 a Bank Holiday. We’ll be open as we always are on Bank Holidays so customers can contact us about their money if they need to, plus Mobile and Online Banking will still be available as normal but HSBC UK branches will be closed.

What will happen to payments on Monday 19 September?

This table shows how the Bank Holiday will affect various payment types:

When will I see pending transactions that are due to be paid on 20 September?

Will I be charged for late payments for any first direct accounts?

Any payments due on 19 September for our (and HSBC UK or John Lewis Financial Services) accounts eg credit cards, loans etc won’t be classed as late (you don’t need to contact us about this). They’ll be made/applied as shown in question 5 above. If you have any questions about payments to or from other organisations, please contact them.

I was due to be paid today (19 September), why hasn’t my money arrived?

You’ll need to check this with your employer. As shown in the table in question 5, payments won’t be processed on 19 September so they needed to process them early for the money to reach your account before then. If it hasn’t, it’s likely it will be paid on 20 September instead.

My mortgage payment is due on 19 September, what will happen?

Will my money still be legal tender and will it be replaced?

Will scammers try to use this event to defraud people?

Fraudsters often use significant events to take advantage of people so always pays to be alert. Just so you know, we’ll never ask for your account details, ask you to move your money or call you out of the blue. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t so don’t give out any personal information and call us using the number on the back of your card straightaway.

I’m switching my account to first direct using the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) – what will happen?

Any switches arranged via the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) won’t now complete on 19 September – we’re really sorry for any inconvenience this causes. Unless you receive an SMS confirming an alternative CASS completion date, your switch will now be completed on 20 instead of 19 September.
