Switching current accounts process

 1. Check if you’re eligible

First, check if you’re eligible to open a current account with us. Read our what do you need to open a bank account guide to find out more.

2. Open your new account

You can apply for a first direct current account in minutes on the App or online. If you’re approved, you’ll get a virtual card and access to Online Banking straight away. Find out more about opening a first direct account.

3. Start the switch

When your first direct account is open, you’ll need to:

  • log into your first direct App
  • select the account you want to transfer into
  • tap ‘switch to us’ from the account menu and follow the instructions

We’ll ask you for your account details, existing account details, and preferred switching date – and take it from there. The switch can take 7 working days.

Don't worry, we’ll also let your old bank know you’re moving.

4. Start using your new account

When you’re all switched over, your old bank account will be closed and your new one will be ready to use.
