Managing your subscriptions

From TV to music and even cheese – there’s a subscription for pretty much anything these days. Here’s everything you need to know about managing yours.

What are subscriptions?

Subscriptions are recurring payments that are typically set up as continuous payment authorities on a debit or credit card. They allow a service provider to charge your card automatically at regular intervals, for example monthly or annually.

If you use services such as Netflix or Spotify, your subscription is the regular fee you will pay in order to access them.

When you’re browsing or shopping online, watch out for wording such as trial, membership, subscription and plan, to make sure you don’t accidentally sign up for a subscription. You should check the terms and conditions of any company before signing up to their subscription services.

How to cancel a subscription

You should usually cancel a subscription directly through the service provider. Your subscription can usually be managed online in your account settings or over the phone. You may also be able to change or pause your subscription.

You can also cancel a subscription by chatting with us on our App. Simply go to 'Help' and select 'Chat now'. To do this via Online Banking select 'Message us'. You can also call us on 03 456 100 100.

When we cancel a third party subscription, we place a ‘stop’ on the system using your most recent payment details, which should stop the provider from taking your next payment. To make sure you’re fully covered, it's still recommended that you let the provider know too.

Keeping track of your subscriptions

It’s quite easy for subscriptions to mount up. So you should check what you’re subscribed to on a regular basis to make sure you're not paying for something you no longer need. A scroll through your transactions over the last couple of months should reveal what you’re subscribed to.

You should also keep an eye on any free trials you sign up for and make sure you cancel the ones you don’t want before you start paying for them.
